Isn’t it strange how hard it can be to try something new? I felt that way simply in posting this video. it’s different and vulnerable and sometimes even putting yourself out there in the smallest ways can make you feel insecure. But that is exactly why I am doing it: because in 2014 I am embracing every little thing that makes me uncomfortable. I am posting things that are different and letting the feedback come, and understanding that no opinion can define me but my own.

I decided to write a blog post as I’ve done hundreds of times but this time, I read it as I felt it. The voice inside my head.

Annamaria - Wow, this has touched me to tears. You are such a wonderful person giving joy, hope and courage to all of us. I would love to say so much to you as I have been following and being amazed by your work for years, but more than anything I am grateful. Grateful that the essence of you is the essence of everyone of us as well, and your work is touching us because we also carry the possibility of art as strong as yours in ourselves. Thank you for making my heart smile, thank you for sharing the pictures of your soul.ReplyCancel

Either way, Im in love with your photography and want to say a massive thank you for opening my mind to the world around me and making me feel like I can tackle my fears and be resilient in achieving that goal! Laesia Juditta - Lost in your dreams already… Huhhhh… It was so sincere.

I have to tell you when I first saw your pic “Finding Strength” (the lady in red in the desert) it gave me an inspiration to start a campaign for a reprint of Anita Diamant’s The Red Tent in Hungarian. It was printed 10 years ago and I had to wait exactly 3 years to get one copy in a second-hand shop. I thought about all my friends and sisters who might love this book. Then I saw your picture… and that was THE MOMENT. The author of the book was as kind and helpful as possible and now it seems it will go… So thank you for that picture, too… (my favourite…)

And this was all just last year. πŸ™‚ New one has just started. πŸ™‚

I loved this video, too. Good to see that we are not alone with fears and that there really are ways to cope them and still go on…ReplyCancel

    Stacy Shaeffer - Brooke,

We have never met. You do not know who I am, but you so thoroughly know my spirit. You know my heart. You know my passion. You know the way my brain works. When I discovered your work, I felt as though I had finally found someone who understood the art I was wishing to produce. So often we get caught up in finding the balance between shooting to profit for our families and the true art that lives within our souls. As a artist, I long to create images that move me. To bring to life the vision in my head. The one that haunts me in my dreams, stops me in daily grind, the one that longs to be put to life on paper. I hope that 2014 brings me more time to capture those images in between the profit shooting and the daily life of being a Mom, Wife, Business Owner, Daughter, Sister and Granddaughter. I hope that I can find the artist who lives inside of my soul the way you have inspired me to be so. I asked for only thing for Christmas this year, your book. I have spent hours upon hours just admiring your work and the words you pour so effortlessly and poetically onto paper. Thank you for sharing your soul, your gift and your artistry with the world. Thank you for inspiring the inner artist within myself. Wishing you so much joy and inspiration in 2014 and I cannot wait to witness your art this year. Blessings. ~Stacy Shaeffer, Stacy Shaeffer PhotographyReplyCancel

Tara Eveland - Wow that made me tear up as well, as today I too released something that is so out of my comfort zone. I am not brave enough as you to allow comments on my blog, I don’t want to read any negativity as I embark on this ‘journey for inspiration’ as I call it.
But reading your book daily, writing down endless quotes and notes from it, watching the creative live recaps and looking back through my notes the last time you were there talking about failure and growing, you have no idea how much you have touched my life and inspired me in a way that has CHANGED my life and my heart and soul. I don’t feel like something is ‘missing’ anymore, I know how to fill that spot and that is with my art to express my ideas and emotions, even if others don’t understand or even like it.
Again, thank you for your generiosity and forever giving back to our community. It is my dream for this year to meet you face to face at a workshop, or maybe even I’ll get pickd for you CL audience, but I just want the chance to meet the artist that inspired me to take that first step and push past my fears and in doing so has changed my life and heart!
If you have a second of your day to look at my blog and read the latest entry, I am introducing my first series in it, and I wrote about the thought process that went into it, the passion and the personal visions for it, I would love to get your input on it. Paulo Carvalho - My dream will take place this year. I’m starting my first big project in photography, but here in Portugal everything seems so hard and keeps us close to the abyss, ready to give up. And then the fear takes possession of me. We live in a period of financial and economic crisis and everything is so complicated, full of obstacles that keeps us from achieving the goal. I’m not going to accomplish the dream, I think very often. Fall and get up. It must be that way. Today I went down again, because we are living a sad day. A special Portuguese athlete, a champion, died. Our country is sad. But every time I hear your words, it’s like a hand pulling me up, and this video, once again did it. So, thank you. I admire you, not only your talent, but your personality, your spirit. Congratulations for what you are.ReplyCancel

Suellen Cook - Expressing emotion in my imagery has become my direction for 2014. Thanks to you and your inspiring words and imagery. I have always been afraid of taking images of people but recently, again thanks to you, I have started to explore portraiture.
Most of my imagery has been devoid of people as I was trying to express loneliness and abandonment but I have realised that through portraiture I have the potential to make a deeper contention to the viewer. Thanks Brooke for inspiring me and giving me courage to explore new ideas and for adding in no small way to my future artistic direction. I firmly believe you are “one out of the box” (now there is an inspiration in itself – I often use sayings to inspire my art) when it comes to truly giving with integrity and honesty, thank you :). warmest wishes from Australia, SuellenReplyCancel

thomas miles - Hi again, Ive been wondering for a while now and just wanted to quickly ask: how do you come up with your titles? I mean, there soooooo beautiful and are just so amazing, so do you get them from somewhere, like read a word and want to use it, or do they just come naturally? I want to give my photos beautiful titles aswell but not have them just be creative for the sake of being creative… hope this makes sense XDReplyCancel

    • January 9, 2014 - 8:14 am

brookeshaden - Hi Thomas! Great question – I absolutely adore titles. I usually pick out one word that holds a lot of meaning for me pertaining to the image I am titling, and then often I try to put that into context that sounds poetic and doesn’t give too much away. I love titles that have a rhythm and mystery to them.ReplyCancel

Brian - Hi Brooke, I seem to have a link between making money with my photography and passion. I had a dream, but it died. I can no longer make a living at my photography and that has called into question whether or not I should continue with photography. Seems every time I look through the view finder the thought that crosses my mind is – what’s the point and I don’t press buton. In your opinion is it a good idea to just step away from it all or do you keep pushing it in hopes the spark will return?ReplyCancel

    • January 9, 2014 - 11:59 am

brookeshaden - Hi Brian, I totally understand you. I have had those same feelings countless times in my journey so far, and I expect them to continue periodically. I think that the best thing to do is to mentally unlink photography and money, even if just for a short time. Shoot what you love just because you love it, and let the rest fall into place more naturally. If you are feeling very frustrated, take a break. Don’t set a time limit. Just fill your mind with other creative outlets. I usually feel very motivated after doing something else for a time. And if you want to challenge yourself, plan a shoot based around all of the things that you love and shoot it 100% for you. Don’t worry about how it will turn out, just have fun with it. I find that business works best for me when I’m not forcing anything – when I shoot what I love and then let others know how passionate I am about it.ReplyCancel

There is no way that I could start a new year without a new endeavor. Stagnation is the enemy and I want to constantly push myself in ways that I think will be better for me in the end. This new video is the first of many. They will be posted every Monday of this year, dealing with a new topic each week. Some will be educational, some silly, some serious, and all dealing with my passions in the hope that you will follow yours.

This new video is all about the new year. Admittedly I rambled a bit, but I wanted to speak from the heart and just put it all out there on this one. The others will be tighter though! So for this video we deal with a new year, new dreams and aspirations, and I share a photo that I created with those things in mind, including a speed edit of that image.

If you’ll share your new year’s resolutions with me I’d love to hear them because my biggest motivations in life included inspiration itself, and I just love hearing the motivations and dreams of others. Thank you for inspiring me now and always, I take that with me into the new year feeling like anything is possible.

I created a short videos yesterday that I shared on my personal facebook page about my goals for this next year, Its only a minute long so here is the link πŸ™‚ God Bless and happy New Year!

Donna - I love this space you’ve created, Brooke! Thank you!

My resolution/dream for 2014 is to put my work out there more. I struggle with being overly critical of my work and have second thoughts right after I post or deliver, seeing things that could be improved. I want to let that go, still striving to be my best, but also knowing that others may like what’s already there.ReplyCancel

    • January 1, 2014 - 9:03 am

brookeshaden - Thank you Donna! That is really appreciated πŸ™‚

I think that resolution is just beautiful. One of the best things we can do for ourselves as individuals is to find inner peace and know that if we are okay with who we are, we must trust others to feel the same…and if they don’t, that is no concern of ours! I know that you will absolutely blossom in this resolution and I’ll be here 100% backing you!ReplyCancel

Rebecca Grabek - My dream in 2014 is to do more of what I want, and not so much what the client wants. I felt very uncreative the last month or so, but that was because I was doing the cookie cutter family photo’s, and not the type of photos that I truly love. So I ended last year doing a photo that had so much meaning to me, that it made me realize the direction that I want to take my photography, my business in this year. Thank you for all your inspiration!ReplyCancel

    • January 1, 2014 - 9:12 am

brookeshaden - Rebecca, this is so inspiring to read. I hope that you’ll keep me posted about your progress. I am so excited for you and your journey. There is no better feeling than finally understanding what makes you tick. Please do share your new creations with me sometime, I’d love to be inspired!ReplyCancel

  • January 1, 2014 - 9:22 am

Julie Ray - Thank you Brooke. One thing I can say this year is you have inspired me so much to show who I am and post “my other side” without reservations of being judged. I love you for that!

brookeshaden - I LOVE YOU for that, Julie! I have been very inspired by watching your journey. Love always being sent to you πŸ™‚ReplyCancel

I love your art and your ability to tell a story with your compositions.ReplyCancel

  • January 1, 2014 - 9:42 am

Val - I just have to give a little s/o to you Brooke. Your photography, videos and your spirit are a great inspiration to me and is a real motivator to push myself to create. I’ve been a follower for a long time, and although very unconfident I’m getting stronger a little each day to extend myself in photography. I’m actually terrified of bringing the images I have in my head to life because I don’t have social connections to find models, nor do I have the energy to go and photograph while putting my academics on the line. But thanks to you I’m starting to find the courage to bring them out, one by one. Thank you so much Brooke – I was smiling the whole way through this video you’ve made.

And since you’d like to know, one of the biggest dreams I have this year is to find romance πŸ™‚ Being lonely is one of the biggest burdens in the world; and to find someone there to always have your back and support you is something that I’ve always wanted but never had. Someone to anchor me down somewhere, because I’m really scatter-brained – and to provide a sense of validation for me when none is heard. It’s a little embarrassing, but this is what keeps me going in life; trying to find the other half that seems to be missing (cheesy I know, but that’s me in a very tight nutshell).ReplyCancel

    • January 1, 2014 - 9:45 am

brookeshaden - Val! I think you are just amazing. I am so happy that you’re putting yourself out there more and creating. The best feeling is seeing your imagination come to life. I just love it! Please keep me posted on your journey, I’d love to see what you work on this year and of course….if you find love….tell me about it!! Who doesn’t love a good love story πŸ™‚ And remember that there is community everywhere who are just waiting to send you love and inspiration and encouragement πŸ™‚ReplyCancel

    Cindy - Hi Brooke !
I usually never give comment because I’m kinda shy (yeah even behind my screen haha) but here I couldn’t not say anything.
I’ve only discovered you a few months ago and all I can say is I love your work ! It is always stunning, so creative, full of emotions. It just looks like nothing I’ve ever seen before. The ‘Wildfire” is truly one of my favorites !
Besides this blog and the videos are such a great idea ! You do inspire me, and I also admire your personality now. I will start thinking about my dreams over unmeaning resolutions. Wishing you the best for 2014 !

Paulie - Brooke, everyone has said it here in the comments, but all the same I would like to reiterate. You have no idea of the immensity of what you do. Your images are a reflection of you, such an amazing heart; inspiring! It’s hard not to get swept into your photos, your love for what you do Brooke is addictive and contagious. • January 1, 2014 - 10:01 am

Heidi - You truly are my favorite. I have a lot of photographer friends, and they are the kind that believe everything has to be done in camera, and a photo as natural as possible. I could never so this…. And when I found your work I got so excited because it made so much sense out of mine, and made me feel less intimidated to show it…. So thank you for all you do and for being my inspiration. Happy new year…. And I cannot wait to see all that you’ll do!ReplyCancel

    • January 1, 2014 - 10:10 am

brookeshaden - Hi Heidi! Yes! It is so important that an artist do whatever is necessary to produce art. It is what we breathe! And if that requires some photoshop, so be it. It is no less art. Happy new year!ReplyCancel

Christie - I recently watched your video on Inspiration. It was as if you were talking directly to me, and it seems that way each time I watch one of your videos. For 2014, I want to learn to love myself, learn to be happy and become the best photographer in my area..

    Thank you for inspiring me.

    • January 1, 2014 - 10:07 am

brookeshaden - Christie, that is great! How important it is to love yourself. Once you love yourself, others will follow – this I truly believe. I hope your journey is fulfilling!ReplyCancel

Katheleen - I discovered you by accident, but I immediately loved your work. Last year was, for me, a year of learning. Specially in photography. I admire your work so much, and then I saw you on Creative Live and found out you are vegan and other cool things about you.
Now, I am trying to create inspired by your creativity exercises and trying to let go of the fear, which is my worst enemy. Anyway, all I wanna say is that you are so inspiring, I hope to be not only as good as you, as photographer, but as a person.
You are an amazing human being.
    Happy new year!ReplyCancel

    • January 1, 2014 - 10:12 am

brookeshaden - Kathleen, that is just awesome. I am so glad to hear that you are letting go of fear. That is something I am always working on, trying to be better. It is hard, but the most rewarding journey. I wish you so much fulfillment in 2014! And thank you, so so much, for being kind!!ReplyCancel

  • January 1, 2014 - 10:30 am

Samantha Pugsley - Brooke, thank you so much for sharing this with us. I’m always honored and thankful that you choose to give so much of yourself to your followers. I discovered your work mid-2013. Everything you’ve done has really spoken to me not just on an artistic level but also on a personal one. You’ve inspired me to do so much this year from getting out of my comfort zone when I shoot to creating a video of myself for your contest (and that was a huge deal to me because it really helped me over come a very real fear I had).

I think that is what really inspired my dream for this coming year. I don’t want fear to hold me back anymore. I still don’t do things because of what other people might think. Sometimes I pass up amazing locations because there’s a chance someone might see me shoot. Sometimes I scrap a concept because I’m afraid someone in my family won’t like what I have to say. I’m done with this. I want to take risks and live in the moment and stop worrying what everyone else thinks.

And I have you to thank for this. Thank you for teaching me so much in 2013. I can’t wait to see what you create in 2014.ReplyCancel

    • January 1, 2014 - 8:24 pm

brookeshaden - Oh Samantha, thank you so much. I cannot wait to see what you do with your amazing creativity. You have so much goodness in you, that I know and believe in truly, and if ever you feel like sharing your endeavors with me, I would be so thrilled to hear!ReplyCancel

Vanessa Powell - My sweet Brooke. Your spark and a light drew me to you from the beginning…the moth to the flame, but instead of flying too closely and scorching my wings, I flew a little higher because of your support, love and light.

You’ve helped me to make my 2013 a year that is closer to my artistic dreams than I’d ever imagined. You have helped me to see and to find, to search and to lead.

Your influence has meant so very much to me my darling, and I hope you know…no…I hope you FEEL the love that radiates back to you. Thank you. A million thank yous, and a few heart felt hugs too.ReplyCancel

You give others the courage to explore who they are and express it in ways they have never imagined. My dream for 2014 is to do just that. Explore, create, imagine. Jen McKey - Hi Brooke!
This is an amazing idea for a blog, I can’t wait to discover the new material and inspiring words every week! The most inspirational time for me in 2013 was when I watched your first creative Live course a couple months ago. Paradoxically, I remember not being able to pick up the camera for days after that, because I was afraid I would just end up copying your work. But after a few days, the original ideas just came flowing! And I have never been as photo-prolific as I am since then! Like right now, I’m at my grandma’s home in South Texas, and it’s on a beautiful piece of land. I’ve been coming here since I was a baby, and I have never felt so inspired by it than I am this year. I’m actually on my way to do my first self-portrait shoot! So Thank you Brooke, for sharing so much of yourself through your art and through your words. You are a true inspiration.

    • January 6, 2014 - 9:03 am

brookeshaden - Oh Jen! These words you’ve written have really touched me. To hear about your inspiration is as inspired as I can get, so selfishly, thank you!! I cannot wait to see what you come up with for a self-portrait, should you want to share. <3ReplyCancel

    Susan - Hi Brooke!
I am so excited about your new blog! Thank you for being so willing to share your creativity and passion with all of us! Your generosity of spirit is such a joy!

You have been such an encouragement to me as I find my photographic voice.

Back in May, I was getting ready to photograph my first wedding (as a second shooter) and my first prom and I was petrified. That very weekend, I saw you on CreativeLive and your teaching gave me the confidence to get out there and do the best job I could. And everything went great!

I will always be grateful to you and look forward to seeing all that you have to offer in the new year! Happy 2014!

I need to exercise more in order to find a better health, and I want to find a good balance between things in my life. Jenn - Hi Brooke,
You are such an inspiration. I feel like I’ve been stuck in a rut for quite sometime now. For 2014 my dream is to let go of thoughts that hold me back from expressing myself, be present in the moment & draw inspiration from it. I’ve always been a dreamer and a creative thinker, but once I became a Mom, it’s like all that was put on hold. I now know where to find my inspiration again. My Daughter & the imagination I had as a child when anything was possible. Thank you!!ReplyCancel

Kimberley - I just soak up all your passion and your ‘hippy-ness’ seriously, there are only a handful of genuine photographers out there who wish to share, inspire and give back. EVERYTHING you are doing is what I have thought about – but never moved on. Could be lazy, could be critical of myself, could be fear, could be I am ADHD and can never stay with one idea until it is complete – who knows but 2014 is my year to move on those dreams (teaching, healing others and myself with my work, and getting my work out in the public eye more often) So thank you for being you and in a way giving me permission to just shoot and create what I need to. (Yea, photography is my healing/growing tool and you were just added to my toolbox ha ha)ReplyCancel

Izzy - Thank you for sharing this. I am so incredibly inspired by all of your work as a young photographer. I often notice that I am limiting myself for whatever reason — whether it is a lack of resources or access to locations, and I understand now that I may be looking for reasons to avoid shooting. Maybe I don’t want to try new things, because what I have done before always has been met with good feedback. Your surreal photos take my breath away. Your editing process is really quite incredible and you’re ability to be in touch with yourself is more than admirable. While I don’t want to solely depend on photoshop to create my photos for me (and I am in no way suggesting that this is what you do), I have realized that photoshop can create wonderful things — it allows your imagination to run wild and the possibilities of visual composition to be endless — if you don’t have the dress you need, you can take a photo and paste it in. If the background isn’t as you want it to be, you can adjust it.

We do have to be careful though I believe, and ensure that the usage of photoshop is still your work, your photography. If we depend on it to much, we can become reliant on it, and lazy, thinking that if we need something we can just paste it in.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with us and I wish you the best.ReplyCancel

Imagine a world where people thought every day was New Year’s day. Imagine a place where potential was always realized, dreams always capitalized on, and life was constantly moving forward to a place of inspiration. That is the power that a new year has on us. We feel as though something has been renewed and reset; we finally have the power we had been searching for to make changes and be better. A new year means a second chance, or for many of us, countless second chances. It means a time for us to think about who we have been and who we are, who we want to be and how we can be. But more than that, it is a time for us to create an image of ourselves with as much imaginative intensity as we can muster.

What if we lived every single day like it was the start of a new year? What if we could wake up and feel a sense of renewed energy, as though each day were the start of something new? I believe that we can. I believe that we should. And I believe that if we don’t, life becomes stagnant. Stagnation is the enemy of inspiration. Inspiration is what fuels life, it is what keeps us motivated and excited and passionate. Without that passion, life stalls. We are sidelined from our own lives.

As the year progresses, never believe that the chance for a new start is past. Never believe that something is out of your control. Never think that you don’t have the power to change, even if that change is contained to your mindset and not necessarily your actions.

There are so many pitfalls that I run into when embracing a new year. The scary “what if” factor – what if this happens or that, and I can’t do this or that. Well, what about the other Β “what ifs”? What about asking yourself – what if something amazing happens this year? What if I plan a life for myself that I love? What if I find myself in control of all the things I’ve always dreamed of?

The fact is that we are already in control. The great thing about a new year is that we have more potential to realize that. And why? Because of a date on the calendar. Because of a one-digit number change. Thirteen to Fourteen. We see that year change and suddenly possibilities are endless. Just remember this: every day is a new day. Every moment is a catalyst for change. Moments come and go like waves lapping on the seashore, but we have every opportunity to ride them out into the endless ocean. It is deep and full of fear, but if it weren’t, it wouldn’t be worth watching in awe of the beauty and power it possesses.

Isn’t that why so many of us fear the ocean, or appreciate it? It is vast and unspeakable in size, and the opportunities it possesses and the secrets it holds draw us in closer, until we can no longer see the floor below and the dark depths either lure us forward or push us back. Let it pull you in. Let every new moment take you one step further into the unknown where the impossible is less impossible, and fear turns into the simple acceptance of a road untravelled.

Bettye Rainwater - “Stagnation is the enemy of inspiration.”

I read this in your book. Wrote it down in my journal. Think I’ll paint it on a plate or something πŸ™‚ Brilliant.

Stagnation. Enemy of *many* things. Relationships (an issue currently near to my sad heart).

Every day *is* a new day. Thanks for saying that. I know I need to hear that. Again. And again and again and again.

I’m loving the new blog so much!ReplyCancel

I asked the amazing lovely people on my Facebook page to send me their favorite photographs that they took in 2013. The response was overwhelmingly happy. To see images and know that each one of them was created by someone who is proud of their achievements fills my heart with so much joy, and I hope it does yours as well.

We must remember, always, that art is personal. These pictures are all loved in equal measure, and I treasure them as one of the greatest gifts I have seen this year. Thank you for sending them. I didn’t get to respond to each email, but please know that everyone’s kind words touched me so deeply, and I carry those words with me into the new year.

Without further adieu…The amazing images of a community that I share my inspiration with:

Happy New Year – One Last Look at 2013! | Sydney Paige Richardson - […] creation and her new post –  is about working with others and being inspired by others. Promoting Passion is amazing and I am excited to say one of my photos with my model Savanna is on there! My dreams are […]ReplyCancel

Well, I have to say, even though writing on this blog looks exactly the same as writing on my old blog, it feels…different. Special. And I intend to make it so!

I moved blogs because this year I have new hopes for myself (personally and professionally). I want to do as much as is humanly possible to help in any way that I can, and that extends to anyone reading this blog to the charity work I’ll be doing in India (and hopefully more!).

Promoting Passion is a big idea that I’ll be introducing a little bit at a time. You’ll see that you can get ideas for various charities you can become involved with, and in time that will grow into a campaign that anyone can join to teach workshops to underprivileged groups…but that will come out in it’s own time, when all of the appropriate contacts are collected.

So! In the meantime, I’ll be writing here like my usual self, sharing new images, essays, and what I hope to be inspirational thoughts. But I’m adding something a little different to this blog. Every Monday of the new year I’ll be releasing a video. If you ever have a question or idea for a video topic, please do let me know and I will do my best to answer it. Every Monday you can check in here for a new message, and the topics range from how-to videos for shooting and editing to thoughts on inspiration…and everything in between.

It’s the start of 2014. It is the perfect time to try new things and inspire yourself. But always remember that every moment of every day holds that same opportunity, and it is up to us to take it. I hope you enjoy the new blog, and thank you INFINITELY for being here…my world is brighter for it.

Bettye Rainwater - I love the idea of sharing photography with those in need…one of my current blog responsibilities is for the school (for those with autism) where I work and I’m planning a project of giving students and clients disposable cameras to shoot their day with…so maybe we can get a look at what the day looks like through their eyes. Some of the kids are higher functioning and I hope to spend some time sharing lessons on using natural light and creating interesting compositions.

I have much to learn about photography…but I love to share what I do know!

I look forward to hearing more about your project when it’s time!ReplyCancel
