“Developing a meaningful art practice & find our ‘Why'”
Photography has been a way for me to examine the meaning of life, my purpose, and a way to try to make sense out of the senseless in a constantly shifting reality. Why do you make photos?
In this workshop, we will investigate “why.” The reason why we make photos is the signature for our practice and voice in our work. I’ll share my process from finding inspiration to developing a meaningful art practice and thought-provoking images. Learning to draw from our personal experiences to build a strong foundation for a soul-connected practice that is consistent to our “why.”
“Editing Fantasy Art From Start to Finish”
Learn Robert’s editing process from start to finish. Expect to see an image come to life from a raw file all the way to a polished postable work of art. He will touch on tons of editing tips and tricks such as masking and compositing techniques, using layer styles, magical lighting effects, using blending modes, color adjusting techniques, and fancy finishing touches.
“You Are Your Brand: How your personal values should guide your work”
Each of us faces dozens of decisions on a daily basis ranging from the mundane (what should I have for dinner?) to the consequential (what do I want to be when I grow up?). Embedded in each of these decisions are our core values. In this workshop, we will talk about how having a clear understanding of your core values will help guide your business decisions and develop the unique brand that will differentiate you from others.
“Conceptual Photography”
During this workshop, participants will photograph a conceptual image. Brooke will demonstrate key shooting techniques to communicate a deep message and ensure that the story connects to an audience. She will photograph a triptych to demonstrate how stories can be told across images, and speak to the importance of series cohesion for gallery and museum collection. Ending with a discussion about fine art business, you will walk away with:
-
- Your own iteration of a conceptual image (hands-on shooting)
- Techniques for shooting simply yet impactfully no matter your budget
- Ideas for a triptych or conceptual series
- Knowledge of how to start or grow a fine art business
Bring your camera and notebook so we can brainstorm images and ideas together. This workshop will be conducted outdoors, so please also bring sunscreen, an umbrella if you need protection from the sun, and water.
“What Brands Want (Hint, It’s You)“
After two seasons of Creator-in-Residence and two seasons of Alpha Female+, we’ve learned a few things about what helps grant candidates put their best foot forward. “You Are Your Brand: How your personal story will help you stand out”
Let’s face it – there’s not a whole lot in the world that hasn’t been done before. So, how do you differentiate yourself from everyone else? What would make someone choose YOU for their family portraits or the art they hang on their wall? The answer is: YOU. In this workshop, we will talk about how to share your personal story and personality in a way that will help your work to resonate with others and build trust.

He will touch on tons of editing tips and tricks such as masking and compositing techniques, using layer styles, magical lighting effects, using blending modes, color adjusting techniques, and fancy finishing touches.
“Thinking With Motion”
For many of us, still photography was our first artistic venture and feels like coming home. We’ve learned to compose, light and shoot for the purposes of capturing a single moment. In my class, I want to take you a step further and show you a way to think in terms of capturing sequences for movement and time.
Just as many of us find ourselves overwhelmed and perplexed by the current demand for motion/video-based content that we’re seeing pushed on the major social media platforms. My aim is to remove this confusion and give you a new way to repurpose your portfolio and photographic skillset to produce high-quality videos.
This class will cover basic and intermediate editing techniques, editing theory, music selection (and its importance in dialing in mood and tone), color grading, social media formats, as well as a brief overview of optimal camera settings for that “cinematic look.”
(Note that this class will be mostly editing and theory based, not necessarily camera based. Shooting demonstrations will be done on a cell phone using easily accessible apps or free computer software.)
“Creative miniature photography post-production”
This session is all about post-process workflow. We will explore the postproduction and color grading of miniature scenes in Photoshop. In this session, you will learn how to File process in Photoshop Camera Raw, Create a composite in Photoshop, combine images and add backgrounds, add Digital effects and light, and color grade using Nik software.

“Being Bravery: From Nat Geo to Becoming Mother Earth”
In this lecture, Danielle Khan Da Silva details her internal struggles of having one foot in the world of documentary photography, supported by companies and clients such as Nat Geo, Patagonia, and Safina Centre in the realms of land protection and “conservation,” and having another foot in the world of self-portraiture, where she embodies Mother Earth herself. Can one truly be all these things at once?

“Conceptualizing your Branded Story”
The ideas we work with shape the business we create. Theme, story, and identity can all be closely studied to formulate a way of communicating – through art and business – to create a more meaningful and profitable brand. During this class, we will workshop ways of creating art that has a higher connection point to audience. We’ll look at ways of taking the unique aspects of our craft and languaging them into a more sustainable business model.
Please bring: a few images (either digitally or in print) that you can reference to workshop your own themes and brand, as well as a notebook and pen for mind-mapping and planning. This will be a hands-on, discussion and critique-based workshop.
“Becoming Mother Earth”
A workshop for those with a strong connection to the land and who feel the urge to express it through self-portraiture. In this session, participants will work with Danielle Khan Da Silva, a creator whose deepest desire is for co-liberation, through protecting the sacred and standing in integrity with all that is.
Dani is more than a photographer – they are a land/water protector, a storyteller, a visionary, and a leader who is connected strongly to their ancestors and their ancestral teachings. Dani also pays homage to the many Indigenous people, teachings and communities, the land, the water and all the non-human beings that have been instructors on this path.
In this experience participants will connect with the living, breathing Mother Earth, and let that relationship guide the process of creation. Bring a camera, your imagination, and prepare to get dirty. You might want to bring some kind of sheet/tulle/dresses/garments as well as a towel/wipes. It is ideal to have a tripod and a remote shutter as well (there are apps that allow you to use your phone to connect to some cameras if you don’t have one).

“The Power of The Personal Brand”
Creators who want to make a living from their art often think their art is the product they’re selling. But they’re wrong. In today’s social media-driven world, the product is the creator. How you build your brand and market yourself will make or break the success of your art. Learn the foundational elements of personal branding as a creator and start building a plan for how you want the world to see you.

2:45PM-3:45PM: LECTURE
Brooke Shaden
“Impermanence and Art”
What is the nature of art? It is ephemeral, and the process of creating art is the process of grieving. We must let go of our creations to make room for what comes next. In this talk, I break down how living in a state of constant impermanence has led to a healthier relationship to the art I make and how audiences view it, too. All at once deep and optimistic, we walk through the difficult choices I’ve made and discover the art that has unfolded as a result.
