Good read, Brooke. Of course I am guilty of fixing myself too. A stronger chin, whiter teeth, soften up a few wrinkles. (I have for some time joked that I’d like to Photoshop my face in real life). It’s because I want people to see me how I feel, not how I seem to present myself. But yes, we need to learn to see the beauty within! In fact, for the last several months I have been trying to “see” people almost as if I were in a dark room and could barely make them out so I can feel their spirit, kindness and beauty.

Your words are always so inspiring, Brooke. I try not to edit too much in photos but I do edit out distracting “temporary” flaws…things that will not always be there, such as blemishes. For anything else, I may soften it a bit but I do my best to keep an accurate representation intact.

Beautiful and true words! We are so deep into these social “beauty” patterns, that we sometimes forget to live our real beautiful lives and get into depression, thinking how to stop our aging, how to get into that model shapes and looks, shapes of plastic, shapes of stones.

At PSW. Learning a few cool things but I’m in my last class and realized that I had no “Brooke” moment this year:/ It also only took five minutes of being at this expo to fully solidify the artist that I want to be and see what I definitely do not want to be. I give you full credit for that. Thank you so much for helping me find my way in the woods that is this crazy industry.

In reply to Katrin Auch. That is so true, Kat! We are our own worst critics. Hardly anyone else scrutinizes, or even sees for that matter, the imperfections that seem so glaringly obvious when we look in the mirror. So there's is a certain level of truth to the subtle retouch.

“That perfection of beauty cannot be captured with a camera but is instead painted from within.” I love this phrase. My view of photoshop when it comes to cosmetic retouching (as opposed to “hey look I am flying” retouching) is that I am trying to recreate the warmth and beauty of the person who stood in front of my camera. I think the camera lies cause it insists on pointing out all these tiny imperfections that you don’t see when presented with a personality instead of a still image. Lines always seem deeper, blemishes stand out more—when I am looking back at something I shot, when all I remember is the love in their eyes and sound of their laugh. Do I also tweak images of myself? Hell yeah. Is it truth? maybe not, but if it reflects how I see myself on the inside, it’s a kind of truth.
